Crows Nest Films is a small, independent television production company that specialises in food related tv programmes and productions, although that is by no means all that this multi talented company can do.
The owner contacted me to redesign the website and it had originally been designed using Adobe Flash and exported as an embedded .swf file. This is something I never recommend, not least because search engines such as Google and Yahoo cannot index a site created in Flash and so the webpages simply fall off the cliff never to be indexed, or found online, again.
I worked on producing something that was clean and simple to navigate, that featured a content management system, Twitter feed straight to the home page and that could allow easy upload and streaming of the multiple projects that the company had undertaken.
Unusually, I was also contracted to provide some SEO (search engine optimisation) to various pages of the website in order to improve the Google rankings of the pages. The website has gone from simply not being indexed at all to returning a 3rd entry listing for the search term ‘crowsnest’ and a 2nd entry listing for search terms to do with any combination of ‘independent’, ‘television’, ‘production’ and ‘food’ or variants thereof. It now competes with heavy hitters such as Optomen in the Google results index.
SEO is so important for your website, I frequently cannot convince clients of the absolute worth of spending money and time to optimise a site to return a result in the top two pages of Google. My benchmark is to spend half as much on SEO as you do on the site build itself – and to revisit regularly to keep your site up to date. After all, there is little point in having an amazing website if no one can find you!
